Why We’re Cooking From What We Have
Since about November, our home has been in what I like to call a pantry reset season.
That means we’ve been cooking almost entirely from what we already had stored away — pantry shelves, canned goods, and freezers — and only buying true basics from the store. Milk. Drinks. And yes… the occasional “lazy snack” you don’t feel like making from scratch 😅
No stocking up.
No buying extra “just in case.”
Just using what we already worked hard to put away.
And let me tell you — this morning, it really hit me why this matters.
From Three Freezers to One
I spent the morning cleaning and organizing the kitchen, getting things ready to record some upcoming courses. And as usual, I was talking out loud the whole time — mostly to the babies, who have become my daily audience whether they asked for it or not 😂
As I went through everything, I realized something big:
👉 We’ve gone from three full freezers down to one.
That didn’t happen because we were perfect or disciplined every single day. It happened because we intentionally used the older food we had set aside “for someday.”
And that “someday” finally came.
Why a Pantry Reset Is Such a Gift
Going through your pantry and freezers like this does more than save money.
It:
- Reduces food waste
- Clears physical clutter
- Clears mental clutter
- Helps you see what you actually use
- Honors the time, effort, and resources that went into preserving that food
There’s something deeply satisfying about finishing what you started — about letting nothing go to waste.
I try to do a pantry reset like this every three to four years. Not because it’s trendy or extreme, but because it’s healthy. It gives our household a chance to pause, reflect, and realign before we restock again.
Using What You Have Before Buying More
If your pantry feels overwhelming right now, let me gently say this:
You don’t need more food.
You don’t need fancy systems.
You don’t need to do it all at once.
You just need a plan to use what you already have.
One shelf at a time.
One freezer basket at a time.
One meal at a time.
This season has reminded me that abundance isn’t about how much you store — it’s about how wisely you use what’s already there.
And Yes… The Fun Part Comes Later 😉
I was explaining all of this to the babies this morning, and I laughed because I realized something else:
When this season is done… we get to shop again.
But this time, with intention.
We’ll restock based on what we actually used.
What we actually enjoyed.
What truly supports our family.
That’s the kind of pantry I want — peaceful, purposeful, and prepared.
