Finally Getting Back to Work on the House

For a while, the house felt like a quiet reminder of everything that was on hold.

The foundation sat there, waiting. I’d walk by and picture what it would someday become—a warm kitchen, muddy boots by the door, late-night conversations under a roof we built ourselves. But between life, weather, and a hundred little responsibilities, the work slowed… and then, for a bit, it stopped.

It’s a strange feeling, seeing your dream half-started. You know it’s possible. You know you’ll get there “someday.” But the longer it sits, the heavier it starts to feel.

That’s why this week means so much.

The guys are back working on the house. The foundation is ready, and we’re getting things set so we can finally put the pony walls on. It might just look like boards and measurements and tools scattered around, but to me it feels like someone hit “play” again after being stuck on pause.

Today they had to step away from the house to haul firewood. In a way, that felt fitting too. Building a life out here isn’t just about walls and windows—it’s also about staying warm, taking care of the basics, doing the unglamorous things that no one sees but that make everything else possible.

Tomorrow we’re planning a lumber run, and I’m more excited about it than I probably should be. There’s something deeply satisfying about loading up boards, knowing each one has a place in this future home. It’s like gathering the physical pieces of a dream and bringing them back with you.

We’re finally back to work on the house.

And maybe more importantly—we’re finally moving forward again on this life we’ve been picturing for so long.
